Always a Good Time for 'Comes a Time'
Neil Young’s ninth studio album 'Comes a Time', is one of the musician's most raw and emotional works. The album was originally recorded as a mostly solo, acoustic piece by Young, giving 'Comes a Time' a more relaxed set up with a garage band quality. Released by Reprise Records in October 1978, the album features songs described as moralizing discourses on love's failures and recovering from worldly troubles.
For many years it was rumored that Young had personally purchased some 200,000 vinyl copies of 'Comes a Time' having been unhappy with the album's sound. Young claimed that he, in fact, used the 200,000 LPs as shingles for a barn roof.
The backing vocals of singer Nicolette Larson give the album a more delicate feel, as her melancholic harmonies can be heard throughout. Specifically on the track 'Four Strong Winds', a nostalgic and a bittersweet sense of urgency is displayed. Larson also covered Young's 'Lotta Love' from the album on her own 1978 album 'Nicolette' with Larson's version reaching No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
'Comes a Time' has been described as a more down to earth and direct composition with Stereo Review calling it Young's "simplest, most acoustic, and best produced" record since 1972's Harvest.
