Bob Seger's Against the Wind
It's Music Monday and the album of the week is Bob Seger's "Against the Wind". Let's take a deeper look!
1. It spent six weeks at the top of the Billboard charts and knocked Pink Floyd's "The Wall" from the top spot
"Against the Wind" is Seger's only number-one album to date.
2. The album earned two Grammy awards in 1980
Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band won the 1980 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for the album Against the Wind and Capitol Records art director Roy Kohara won the Grammy Award for Best Recording Package.
3. Every song was written by Seger alone
Jan4. Rock critic Dave Marsh, writing for Rolling Stone, strongly criticized the album as a betrayal of Seger's longtime fans
"I'd like to say that this is not only the worst record Bob Seger has ever made, but an absolutely cowardly one as well" saying that Seger had crafted "failureproof songs that are utterly listenable and quite meaningless."
5. 'Against the Wind', the song, features backing vocals from Eagles co-frontman Glenn Frey
Seger and Frey had met in the mid-1960s when they were both working the Detroit club scene, and had remained close since; a year prior, Seger co-wrote and made a guest appearance on the Eagles' "Heartache Tonight".
6. The song 'Her Strut' is inspired by Jane Fonda
Seger was inspired specifically inspired by Fonda's appearance before the Campaign for Economic Democracies. He stated "I was quite proud of her for doing that. I admired her crust. For going in there and having the strength to speak her mind, so I kind of wrote 'Her Strut' for an '80s woman ... you know, it was the dawn of the '80s, and I wanted to write a song about how women have become so confident and stepped out so much, and I thought Jane was a great role model."
