De Lux at Teragram
Last night, I saw De Lux at the Teragram Ballroom in Downtown LA. Described as a post-disco group, De Lux was started by Sean Guerin and Isaac Franco. The band brings a modern element to nostalgic music of the 80s. With the way lead singer Guerin moved on stage, I was immediately reminded of David Byrne of the Talking Heads (specifically the performance of “Life During Wartime” at the Hollywood Pantages Theater in 1983). Although I was reminded of this performance, nothing the band did felt gimmicky…an homage rather than a direct steal. They definitely have their own vibe and do their own thing. Their song “La Threshold” is a funny yet poignant piece about living in the city where the band originated. “To park for the shows/I give up I’m going home” is a great line, especially since Guerin thanked the crowd for coming to the show since the parking is so terrible Downtown. As an LA native myself, I really loved this tune!
I also want to give a shout out to LUXXURY who opened the show. Only performing with a bass guitar and his DJ equipment, LUXXURY was a great start to the evening. It’s hard to perform by yourself, but LUXXURY gave a grade A performance and had the crowd moving and engaged from the first note.
Overall, my evening at the Teragram Ballroom was a blast. And a shout out to the mozzarella sticks from the bar!
