Elephant - Music Monday

In honor of Meg White's birthday, the album of the week is the White Stripe's "Elephant". Let's take a look at some fun facts!

The album was produced without the use of computers

Instead, the band utilized a duct-taped 8 track tape machine and various gear no more recent than 1963. Jack White produced the album with antiquated equipment, including pre-1960s recording gear.

"Seven Nation Army" became a sports anthem

The song has commonly appeared in audience chants in which a series of "oh" sounds or the name of an athlete is sung to the tune of the song's riff. It has also served as a theme song for sports teams, personalities, and events, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup. According to Alan Siegel of Deadspin, 'Seven Nation Army''s riff is "an organic part of sports culture".

The song "In The Cold, Cold Night" featured Meg on leading vocals for the first time

Meg only performed background vocals for "De Stijl" and "White Blood Cells" previously. This song is my favorite of the album!

The album includes a cover of Dusty Springfield and Burt Bacharach's 'I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself"

Including the song in their repertoire was Meg's idea, and the band had begun to perform the song live prior to recording it for the album.

'You've Got Her in Your Pocket' was almost given to another band

The song was written after the release of the band's self-titled debut album from 1999. Jack had planned on eventually giving it to a local band to cover, but felt it was too personal to give away and recorded it for the album.

In my opinion, this song is Beatleesque with a Neil Young type guitar intro.

The album cover art is actually an elephant!

In an interview with Q Magazine in 2007, Jack said, "If you study the picture carefully, Meg and I are elephant ears in a head-on elephant. But it's a side view of an elephant, too, with the tusks leading off either side...I wanted people to be staring at this album cover and then maybe two years later, having stared at it for the 500th time, to say, 'Hey, it's an elephant!'"

The cover of Elephant appeared on Billboard's list of "The 100 Best Album Covers of All Time".
