Goodbye Sister Disco

In 1978, the Who released their eighth studio album, ‘Who Are You’. Not only was this album the band’s final album of the 70s, it was their final album recorded with Keith Moon, as the drummer passed away three weeks after the release.

The album was made during an era of punk rock, but the band stayed true to their progressive rock sound, evolving it even more through Pete Townshend’s use of synthesizers and strings. The album itself seems to be a commentary on the evolution of music as a whole, with songs like ‘Music Must Change’ and ‘Sister Disco’, with the latter song criticizing and simultaneously saying goodbye to the disco era. “With 'Sister Disco', I felt the need to say that the group would never, ever, in any way do anything like the Bee Gees” said Townshend. However, Townshend also argued that the song was less about disco music itself and more about the art of saying goodbye: “The chorus 'Goodbye Sister Disco, now I go where the music fits my soul'...that is not an indictment of disco music. I like a lot of disco music; I even like discos. It's to do with saying goodbye to, I think, a sort of self-conscious poseur kind of thing The Who had been for such a long time.”

The album functions as a goodbye in many ways. Saying goodbye to Moon, Disco and the 70s, “Who Are You” remains an underrated yet iconic album.
