Rock and Roll Circus - Ultimate Playlist!

And now, your hosts for this evening THE ROLLING STONES! On this day in 1968, the Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus began filming. With direction by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, who would later go on to direct the Beatles' Let It Be documentary, Rock and Roll Circus was absolute chaos from the jump. So without further ado, check out my playlist below also filled with iconic moments and fun facts sprinkled about.

1. The Rolling Stones - Jumpin' Jack Flash

2. The Dirty Mac - Yer Blues

John Lennon and then fiancee Yoko Ono performed as part of a one-shot supergroup called the Dirty Mac, featuring Eric Clapton on guitar, Mitch Mitchell (of the Jimi Hendrix Experience) on drums, and the Stones' own Keith Richards on bass.

3. The Who - A Quick One (While He's Away)

The Who’s performance was deemed to be the best of all the artists who appeared that night. This song is the Who's first publicised venture into the rock opera genre.

4. The Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil

The performances began at around 2 pm on December 11 1968, but setting up between acts and reloading cameras took longer than planned, which meant that the final performances took place at almost 5 o'clock in the morning on the 12th including the Stones!

5. Taj Mahal - Ain't That A Lot Of Love

Pete Townshend recalled "They [the Rolling Stones] weren't just usurped by The Who, they were also usurped by Taj Mahal, who was just, as always, extraordinary. They were usurped to some extent by the event itself: the crowd by the time the Stones went on were radically festive."

6. Marianne Faithfull - Something Better

The 1968 song perfromed by Faithfull was written by Barry Mann and Gerry Goffin, arranged by Jack Nitzsche and produced by Mick Jagger.

7. Jethro Tull - Song for Jeffrey

Jethro Tull was the first of the musical performances that night!

8. The Rolling Stones - Salt of the Earth

A personal favorite of mine as we get some Keith vocals on this one.

Lindsay-Hogg recalled that Brian Jones had phoned him the night before the scheduled filming in order to inform the director that he would not be participating in the film. "I hate the Rolling Stones," Jones told him. Lindsay-Hogg convinced him otherwise and it would prove to be Jones's final public performance with the Rolling Stones.
