Set My Heart On Fire Immediately

Michael Hadreas, better known as Perfume Genius, released his fifth studio album, “Set My Heart On Fire Immediately” in 2020. Hadreas was influenced by his work with choreographer Kate Wallich in which he composed songs for her 2019 dance piece including two singles that didn’t make it on the album. The experience, “blew up this separation between work and the world," resulting in changes to his songwriting. The music videos for the singles, 'On the Floor' and 'Describe' include dance sequences. Those songs did make it on the album.

“Immediately” was praised by critics, calling it Perfume Genius’ best work to date, and praised its exploration of queer themes. Although I’d argue the album's genre to be uncategorizable, I notice some 80s pop influence mixed with classic rock, especially in the guitar sound.

In my book, “Immediately” was a timely hit. One day, during the melancholy summer of 2020, I found myself driving down PCH, trying to find a small escape during the quarantine. I blasted Hadreas’ 'On the Floor', rolled the windows down, allowing the sea breeze to fill my car, and I felt okay for the first time in months. “Immediately”, was my perfect escape during COVID-19. Secrets of a quarantined summer…and that secret is great music!

Most recently, Hadreas released his sixth studio album called “Ugly Season” and if you’re a fan of John Cage or Philip Glass, this album is for you…I’ll say no more. I was lucky enough to see Perfume Genius perform with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs this past October at the Hollywood Bowl. He was featured during the opening number of “Spitting Off the Edge of the World”, his most recent collaboration with the band. Hadreas is a beautiful performer and looked thrilled to be on stage.

If you haven’t listened to Perfume Genius, run, don’t walk, to your nearest record store and pick up a copy of “Set the Walls On Fire Immediately” to start your journey.
