T. Rex's Electric Warrior
On this day in 1977, Marc Bolan tragically passed away. To honor the late musician, this Music Monday, we're taking a deeper look at T. Rex's "Electric Warrior".
1. 'Bang a Gong (Get It On)' was inspired by Chuck Berry
Marc Bolan wrote the song out of his desire to record Chuck Berry's 'Little Queenie' and the now famous opening riff was taken from Berry's song. Bolan even ad-libbed the line "Meanwhile, I'm still thinking" during recording. It can heard during the fade of 'Get It On' and it's originally from, you guessed it 'Little Queenie'.
2. Oasis' Noel Gallagher was inspired by both songs to write 'Cigarettes & Alchohol'
3. The cover art
The cover artwork was designed by English art design group Hipgnosis, who designed logotype for Led Zeppelin among other rock bands, based on a photo taken by Kieron "Spud" Murphy of Marc Bolan at a T. Rex concert in Nottingham.
4. "Get It On", became T. Rex's only top ten hit in America
"We didn't sell out or change the music; the music's the same. It's just that now it's timed in the cosmos to be successful," said Bolan.
5. And finally, "Electric Warrior" is credited as the first glam rock album
The album pioneered the development of the glam scene of the early 70s.
