The Oscars: A Deep Dive Into This Year's Best Song Nominations

1. I’m Just Ken, From "Barbie" - Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt

Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt collabed and won in 2019 for 'Shallow' from "A Star is Born" (the third remake mind you).

2. It Never Went Away, From the Netflix Documentary “American Symphony” - Jon Batiste, Dan Wilson

"American Symphony" is a 2023 American biographical documentary film that explores a year in the life of musician Jon Batiste, his music career, and his wife's struggle with leukemia. My favorite song by him, 'Butterfly' is also about his wife.

3. What Was I Made For? From "Barbie"- Billie Eilish, FINNEAS

The duo won the Oscar for 'No Time to Die' the Bond theme for the 25th James Bond movie in 2021. 'What Was I Made For' just won Best Song at the Grammys where Billie said in her speech her win was "stupid". This song will probably win the Oscar this year only for Billie to declare she doesn't deserve it, AGAIN. Here's my thought, if you don't deserve all these awards stop submitting yourself or better yet stop making music! I'm sick of the self-deprecating. That's all.

4. Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People), From "Killers of the Flower Moon" - Scott George

"Killers of the Flower Moon" was scored by Robbie Robertson of the Band, who passed away last August. He was of First Nations descent as his mother had Cayuga and Mohawk ancestry and was raised on the Six Nations of the Grand River reserve in Ontario Regarding Robertson's score, actress Lily Gladstone, (Mollie), stated, "As young Native kids living around the [reservation] with my dad who loved The Band, loved Bob Dylan, loved Martin Scorsese, it was truly an honor to tell the story against [Robertson's] music and his greatness."

The Osage language song 'Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)', used in the final scene of the film, was composed by Osage Nation members Scott George, Kenny Bighorse, and Vann Bighorse. This nomination makes Scott George the first ever Osage Nation member to be nominated for an Academy Award.

5. The Fire Inside, From "Flamin' Hot" - Diane Warren

Now this is our girl Diane's 15th nomination and 7th consecutive nomination since in 2017. She won an honorary Oscar in 2022 and was also nominated every year from 1996-2001. She just keeps cranking em out!

Who are you rooting for at this year's Oscars?
